Lily, it's great that you got that wallet and family photos back. I think most people would do the right thing if they found a lost wallet or purse.

About 10 years ago a friend of mine had her purse stolen in a restaurant in NYC. It came back in the mail a month or so later with a note saying it was found tossed in some bushes. Nothing was missing except the cash.

My wallet has not been returned yet. If it was left in the cab I would have heard something by now. If it fell onto the street it could be weeks, months, or never before it's returned.

I've returned my share of lost items over the years--2 pocketbooks, a cell phone, and one wallet--so I'm hoping to get my wallet back.

It's not the credit cards and DMV stuff I'm concerned about, it's all the other stuff I had in there that is going to be very hard to replace.

Before we left that morning I had the thought to clear out my wallet and just take what I needed with me, but I got distracted with other things. I should have paid more attention to that little voice.

BTW, If you leave something in a NYC taxi just dial 311 to submit a claim and they'll call you if it's returned. If you know the medallion number of the cab you were in (I didn't get a receipt, so out of luck) they'll contact that cab immediately.

I once had my wallet taken out of my knapsack as I was walking through the subway. The person who did it actually unzipped the compartment to get it out. I was completely unaware until I got home! Approximately 3 months later someone sent it back to me in the mail. I was very happy because I had some old family photos inside that were still there.
