The City of Glass was a very cool place on Melville Rd while I was growing up in the 60s. One fun thing was an old Franklin half-dollar that was varnished into the floor by a cash register. A newbie to the store would bend down to pick it up and bust their knuckles trying to get their fingers around it.

They moved to a location south of Sunrise for a while, but that site too is gone.

I believe City of Glass was also known as Arcadian (Acadian?) Gardens. If you remember that, you must surely remember Stern's Pickle Factory nearby. I was in that place all the time until it closed in 1985. I miss it so.

Hi there, I remember my Dad taking me to City of Glass in the 1950's. I've been looking for a reference to it and came upon your blog.

Recently on a bus trip from Long Island, I passed Hicks Nurseries and thought they might have been "City of Glass" at one time. I researched their history, they were not, and came upon your reference.
